Snowbasin Uphill Skiing

A few years ago, a friend of mine, Steve Nestel, started doing this crazy thing that at the time, I couldn’t possibly understand: he went skiing. Now, obviously, skiing wasn’t the crazy part. The bizarre nature of his new found craze was that the skiing was UPHILL.

“What?” I asked. “Are the lifts broken? You have to ski uphill?” For me, that logic was similar to the age old skydiving question, “Why would I choose to jump out of a perfectly functioning airplane?” But on December 31, 2020, that paradigm changed for me. Following the year of complete craziness that was 2020, I was ready to try something new.

During one of his first avalanche education certification courses, Kory Davis was asked by the instructor from the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) what he wanted to accomplish once he became an avalanche educator. “I want to provide free avalanche education to people in Ogden,” Davis remembers. “And he was like, ‘that’s not possible.’” Because of the overhead costs for things such as instructor pay, insurance and permits, Davis was told, avalanche education organizations depend on course fees to survive.
