Layton, Utah, is a large city in northern Davis County.  Layton is bordered by South Weber, Hill Air Force Base, and Clearfield to the north; by Syracuse and the Great Salt Lake to the west; by Kaysville to the south; and by the Wasatch Mountains to the east.  The area of present-day Layton was settled as an agricultural outgrowth of "Kay's Ward," or present-day Kaysville, in the 1850s.  In fact, this settlement was included in Kaysville's boundaries when the city was incorporated in 1868.  Finally, Layton became an independent unincorporated area in 1902 and was officially incorporated 18 years later.  A fun fact about Layton: The city derives its name from Christopher Layton, a member of the Utah Territorial Legislature in the 1860s who is also credited with founding Thatcher, Arizona.

Today, approximately 67,000 residents call Layton home, making Layton the most populated city in Davis County by far.  Layton is known as a hotspot for retail, shopping, and dining.  The city's retail district contains the Layton Hills Mall, multiple movie theaters, dozens of restaurants, and countless shops and stores.  Because of this, the city's interior is often congested, but Layton's west end is quiet and contains significant farm land.  In addition, the city's east end, on the benches of the Wasatch Mountains, is quiet as well and offers magnificent views of the Great Salt Lake to the west.

Layton contains some luxury living on the city's east end and some rural living on the west end, but most living in Layton is suburban and residential.  More than half of all homes in Layton are valued between $150,000 and $300,000, and the median home cost is $183,800.  In addition, the median home age is well below the national average, according to BestPlaces.net.
