Situated in the northwestern section of Davis County, Syracuse shares a border with West Point, Clearfield, Layton, and The Great Salt Lake. The town was settled in 1878 by Joseph Bodily who built the first official residence. More people came to farm the fertile land and sell salt from the nearby Great Salt Lake. The name "Syracuse" comes from another town in New York State and the town was officially incorporated in 1935.
Syracuse is known as the "Gateway to Antelope Island" because of the causeway constructed between the city and the island in 1969. This gateway has become the reason for the city's expansive growth of recent. Now the town offers recreation and shopping to the delight of its residents including a Walmart Supercenter, movie theater, fast food restaurants, the Glen Eagle Golf Course, and many small businesses.
Today, approximately 24,300 residents call Syracuse home. As the fastest growing city in Davis County for the past 25 years, the population has grown over 141% since 2000. Despite this rapid growth, Syracuse still clings to its agricultural roots. Most of the city's west end offers rural living with plenty of land and space between neighbors. Other portions are primarily made up of residential and suburban living. Approximately 67% of homes are valued between $150,000 and $300,000 with the median home cost at $217,400 (far below the national average).
