As the snow melts and warmer days return, it’s time to prepare your mountain home for spring. Harsh winter conditions can leave behind wear and tear, so a little maintenance now will keep your home in top shape for the coming seasons. Here’s a checklist with 12 essential tasks to help you transition your home from winter to spring.

12 Essential Tasks For Your Spring Home Maintenance Checklist

1 — Seal Windows & Doors

Keep out drafts and prepare for spring storms by re-caulking any gaps in windows and doors. Inspect the weather stripping throughout your home and don’t forget the garage doors. Replace any stripping with gaps, tears, or other signs of wear. This simple maintenance will will help keep your home energy-efficient during temperature fluctuations.

2 — Deep Clean & Declutter

After a winter of being cooped up indoors, a thorough dusting, vacuuming, and organizing, will not only refresh your living space but also help maintain a healthy environment. Focus on areas like baseboards, light fixtures, ceiling fans, and window tracks that tend to collect dirt during colder months.

Take this opportunity to go through your winter clothing and gear. Donate or store away items you no longer need. Check your outdoor gear, like skis, snowshoes, and sleds, and store them properly for the off-season. This clears up space for spring and summer gear.

3 — Service HVAC & Change Filters

Clean or replace air filters and schedule an inspection for your AC unit before summer, to ensure your air conditioning system is in good working order for warmer months.

4 — Schedule Pest Services

Warmer temperatures bring out the critters, so ensuring your home is pest-free will prevent future damage. Check for any gaps or cracks around foundation walls, windows, and doors that pests could use to get inside your home.

Seal any entry points to avoid letting in unwanted visitors. Treat for common pests and install mesh covers over vents and chimneys.

5 — Test Smoke , CO Detectors, & Water Sensor Detectors

Regular testing of these devices can prevent hazards and protect your property and family. Ensure batteries are fresh and detectors are functioning properly.

6 — Inspect & Clean Gutters

Remove leaves, debris, and blockages from gutters to prevent water damage from spring rain.

7 — Check for Roof Damage

After a winter of heavy snow, ice, and wind, check for any damage to your roof. Clear off any remaining snow or debris and inspect for leaks or loose shingles.

8 — Power Wash the Exterior

Remove winter grime from siding, decks, patios, and garage floors. Wash windows inside and out and clean or replace window screens to allow fresh spring air into your home. Be careful with the water pressure, you don't want your paint to peel!

9 — Prepare the Landscape

Assess your yard for damage, prune trees and shrubs, and prepare the garden for planting. This is a great time to clean up any dead plant material or debris left by winter storms. Uncover and clean patio furniture, grills, and outdoor décor.

10 — Check Driveways & Walkways

Winter weather, including freezing temperatures and snowmelt, can cause damage to paved surfaces. Over time, small cracks can expand, leading to more serious issues if not addressed early. Identifying and repairing cracks early on can prevent more costly repairs later.

Sealing minor cracks or repaving small areas can extend the life of your driveway or walkway and keep it looking well-maintained.

11 — Service Outdoor Equipment

Check and service outdoor equipment like lawnmowers, snow blowers, or other tools that may have been unused over the winter. Clean and inspect them to ensure they’re ready for use. Check drip lines and sprinkler systems for any blockages.

12 — Inspect & Maintain Decks

After heavy snow and rain, decks and patios may need repairs or cleaning. Check for any damaged wood, railings, or furniture and restore, restain or replace as necessary.

Prepare Your Home for Spring Showers & Flowers

Preparing your mountain home for spring is an essential task that helps ensure safety, comfort, and longevity throughout the season. From checking your smoke detectors to inspecting your walkways for cracks, every step plays a crucial role in protecting your home from the elements. Tasks like deep cleaning, decluttering, and scheduling pest control not only improve the functionality of your space but also create a welcoming environment for the warmer months.

By staying proactive with regular maintenance through the seasons, such as winter home maintenance, you'll be able to enjoy a well-maintained home, ready for the beauty and adventure that spring in the mountains brings.
